Baia di Ieranto – a hidden gem near the Amalfi Coast

Tucked away on the eastern tip of the Sorrento Peninsula, the Baia di Ieranto is a secluded bay offering one of the most enchanting hiking experiences near the Amalfi Coast. This area, often overshadowed by more popular spots, remains a well-kept secret, providing a perfect escape into nature’s tranquility. Perfect for those who love a good hike but also the feeling of quietness and nature!

A historical sanctuary

The Baia di Ieranto’s name is derived from the Greek word “ierax,” meaning “sacred,” reflecting its spiritual significance over the centuries. The bay’s history is a tapestry of myths, agricultural traditions, and industrial heritage. It’s also believed to be where the legendary sirens of Homer’s Odyssey once dwelled, luring sailors with their enchanting songs.

Once a hub for citrus cultivation, the area still echoes with the ancient techniques used in its terraced olive groves. Defensive towers from the 16th century, like those of Montalto and Campanella, stand as reminders of the region’s battles with Saracen pirates.

In the early 20th century, a limestone quarry operated here, leaving an industrial footprint that lasted until the 1950s. The site was donated to FAI by Italsider in 1987 to protect it from speculative development. FAI has since undertaken significant environmental restoration efforts, reviving the area’s original Mediterranean flora, including rosemary, euphorbia, and juniper.

Today, Baia di Ieranto is recognized as a Site of Community Interest and is part of the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area. Its high biodiversity makes it a haven for nature lovers, offering activities like birdwatching, kayaking, snorkeling, and guided botanical walks.

The Hiking Experience

The trail to Baia di Ieranto begins in the village of Nerano and spans approximately 6 kilometers (round trip). This moderately challenging hike takes about three hours to complete and rewards hikers with stunning views of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island of Capri, and the rugged coastline

The path winds through olive groves and past remnants of the old quarry, leading to the pristine pebble beach and crystal-clear waters of the bay, perfect for a refreshing swim or quiet reflection.
