Depending on site accessibility and ongoing archaeological activities, you may also have the opportunity to explore some of Pompeii's newest excavation areas. These recently opened sections continue to reveal remarkable discoveries and offer fresh insight into life in the ancient city. Possible highlights include the celebrated House of the Vettii, renowned for its magnificent frescoes, and the famous Thermopolium, one of the best-preserved Roman street-food establishments ever discovered.
You'll also encounter the poignant plaster casts of Pompeii's victims, offering one of the site's most unforgettable and moving moments.
After free time for lunch (not included), continue to nearby Herculaneum, a smaller but exceptionally well-preserved Roman town buried beneath volcanic mud rather than ash. Unlike Pompeii, many of its homes still retain upper floors, wooden architectural elements, vibrant frescoes, and intricate mosaics, offering one of the most vivid glimpses into everyday Roman life anywhere in the ancient world. Explore elegant residences such as the House of Neptune and Amphitrite and the luxurious House of the Deer, stroll along the ancient Decumanus Maximus, admire beautifully preserved thermal baths, and visit the former shoreline, where the remains of hundreds of residents were discovered while attempting to escape the eruption.
