Is Sorrento a good base for the Amalfi Coast?

Well, yes. A very good one indeed. 

Sorrento stands right at the beginning of the famous Amalfi Coast and it’s the most optimal place to start your heavenly journey. 

But is Sorrento actually part of the Amalfi Coast?

Well, not really. It stands in a privileged position, the Sorrentine Peninsula, located between Naples’ Bay and the Amalfi Coast. 

And that’s why it’s considered by many the best place to stay while visiting the nearby areas. 

On the right you get:

  • the Ruins of Pompeii;
  • the breathtaking view of the imposing Mt. Vesuvius;
  • the key city of Naples.

While on the left you get the whole Amalfi Coast starting with:

  • Positano;
  • Amalfi;
  • Ravello;
  • and all the other small villages.

How far is Sorrento from the Amalfi Coast and Naples?

Sorrento is located on the northern side of the Amalfi Coast, so the distance will vary depending on the specific location along the Amalfi Coast you are traveling to. For example, Sorrento to Amalfi town is approximately 32 kilometers (about 20 miles) by road. The distance between Sorrento and Naples is also relatively short. It is approximately 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) by road. 

Keep in mind that these distances are approximate and can vary depending on the specific routes taken and any detours along the way. Travel times can also be affected by traffic and other conditions, especially during peak tourist seasons. It’s always a good idea to check with up-to-date mapping tools or GPS navigation for the most accurate information when planning your trip.

From Sorrento to Pompeii, the distance is approximately 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles) by road. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was buried under volcanic ash and pumice after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Today, it is one of the most popular archaeological sites in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The short distance between Sorrento and Pompeii makes it a convenient and common day trip for visitors staying in Sorrento. Travel times can vary depending on traffic conditions and the mode of transportation used.
